St. Luke's Choir
St. Luke’s has always had a vibrant music program. Currently it comprises a semi-professional adult choir and a children’s choir school, as well as visiting professionals and young musicians. The majority of the repertoire is based on European Choral Music with special emphasis on music from the Anglican Tradition.
The choir also frequently performs music composed by Handel, J.S. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert with orchestral accompaniment. Several times a year the choir is joined by the professional Academy of St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra, which was founded in June of 2002 as an artistic extension of the St. Luke’s music program. The performance of great works of music that encompass the widest possible cross-section of culture, time period, and musical style is one of the main goals of the Academy, as well as the showcasing of the unique diversity of the broader community.
In past summers, St. Luke’s offered a Choir and String Camp for the children of St. Luke’s and the community. The camp included worship, outdoor activities, bible lessons, music, vocal performance, music theory, piano, violin, and percussion.
Over the years, St. Luke’s music department has sponsored a trip to the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and a trip to New York City where the children’s choir sang at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Fifth Avenue. We have also sponsored Christmas caroling at nursing homes and neighborhoods in Newtown Borough, with the wider community invited to join us.
We would like our music program to continue thriving and aiding in increasing our church membership.
